16 year-old pole vaulter, Paris McCathrion has continued to improve her performance in competition.
Paris, sponsored by Jalna Dairy Foods Pty Ltd, had a record-breaking summer season of pole vaulting in 2010/11, competing in Australian Junior Championships in Sydney. Paris also won Victorian State and also the Victorian Open Championship.
She competed in the Australian senior tour in Brisbane, beating Commonwealth gold medalist Alana Boyd and finished 3rd to senior women. Paris also finished ninth in her final of the IAAF World Youth Athletics Championshipsin Lille, France in July.
She recently acquired some lovely new poles, and in November 2011 won the Victorian All Schools competition. She competed in Brisbane, winning the Australian All Schools Championships.
As it is early in the season she is only jumping off a short 8 steps, but jumped 4m in the Devenport Carnival in Tasmania in December, beating her personal best of 3.95m.
In January 2012 Paris won the Women’s Pole Vault competition at the Victorian Country Athletics Championships at Bendigo also reaching 4m, qualifying her to compete in the IAAF World Junior Championships in Athletics in Barcelona, Spain, in July. Her coach expects she will jump around 4.35m this year, so fingers crossed she will do well. Paris has also been in Tasmania on training camps, and Brisbane on a camp with Olympian Steve Hooker and Alana Boyd, so lots of travel involved and lots of training. We’re hoping her new poles will enable her to soar to new heights: according to Paris “pole vaulting isn’t a passion, it’s an obsession!” Paris' success has been written up in the Wittlesea Leader and the Advocate newspaper in Tasmania.
